Hi All,
I went down the rabbit hole yesterday while learning to apply diminished chords in some blues progression as passing chords and then found a 7b9 chord and people said that can be interchangeable or can have the same function as each other.
Also found out that full diminished chord can be one of four chords and moving it up a minor third you get the same notes. Very cool and very practical for voice leading purposes :)
Does anyone know more about this topic? I'm still confused about them. This isn't too related to any specific lesson here on GW but still an interesting topic to explore.
Hi Michael!
I don't know enough but am slowly learning. I went down the "bb7 = natural 6" rabbit hole.
If you search "diminished" Tomo has several important lessons.
One thing I know about 7(b9) is it could be part of a 2/5/1 progression.
E7(b9) can be used it between Bm7(b5) and Am7 in the progression below. Kind of "Autumn Leaves"-ish.
Dm7 G7 CMaj7 FMaj7 Bm7(b5) E7(9) Amin7 A7
I think E7(9) could be part of a 2/5/1. E7(9) is the "5" in between the"2" Bm7(b5) and the "1" Am7.
Once I tried to learn twelve "drop 2" shapes for each chord in that progression.
There are twelve shapes because there are 4 inversions of each chord on each of the 3 closed string sets. (1234/ 2345/ 3456)
Search drop 2 and Tomo has lessons on Maj/min/dom7th drop 2 chords on top 4 strings. Really fun lessons.
Kurt
Thank you Kurt!
I know you love Diminished chords!
Good job!
