Hello all, I’ve been studying correct right hand technique and would like to know how to think about the fingers on the right hand.
What is the thought process behind keeping your right fingers (#2,3,4) inside/outside the hand while strumming versus single note playing?
I notice Tomo switching between the 2 depending on the song/exercise and would like to understand the purpose and application of both techniques. Thank you!
Hi Brandon,
I've been working on picking a lot. In fact I just posted a video in the thread "Picking too Deep". Tomo has made some helpful videos in this thread. You will see his technique on full display. Maybe checkk it out!
Hi Ken, I watched it the other day and really opened my eyes. Thank you for asking about that!
I’ll also add that the slow ascending chromatic exercise on 4th string is improving my overall touch with this in mind. The attention to all details from posture, hand and shoulder relaxation, thumb position, muting, pick depth/grip and dynamics is very meditative and enjoyable. Hope you all are doing great!
Thanks Brandon. Honestly, undoing an ingrained style of picking is the most challenging thing for me.
There are many things I can do reasonably well, but picking is driving me up a tree! Very humbling indeed. Keep going!
I'm glad you're progressing with chromatic exercise. It is a very powerful practice indeed!
This 100%. Add to that the fact that my first teacher, 40 years ago?!?!?!, was a folkie finger picker. I hated it at the time, but I'm now more comfortable, rhythm at least, without a pick. I have the same struggle when using a pick of picking too deep. I just watched the video replies to your questions this morning, and not having my hand anchored on the bridge or fingertips on the body will be an adjustment for sure.
