Now this lesson is just brilliant and worth the cost of admission.

For those of us who are trying to break out of the "position playing" or "pattern playing" this is 15 minutes of pure gold. The idea is so simple, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this is going to be a long, long study. By the time you get through, and really burn this concept into your mind with all three chord inversions, on all string sets, in every key, you will KNOW the fretboard inside out, upside down, back to front, forwards and backwards.
I've watched this video twice so far, once without guitar in hand and once with guitar in hand. Here are the benefits that I'm seeing - and I'm sure this is a very incomplete list:
1. Learn/reinforce the notes on the fretboard
2. Learn/reinforce spelling chords (Major, Minor and diminshed)
3. Learn/reinforce the spelling of the triads (Do Mi So = Root, Mi So Do = 1st, So Do Mi = 2nd) and which note to alter for minor/diminished/augmented.
4. Being able to "see" a key on the fretboard
5. Learning the keys (ie. Not having to think if in the Key of F# is B major or minor)
6. Increasing the ability to freely improvise - When Tomo was playing at the end, I was able to (mostly) see what he was doing, even though his playing was speedy.
7. Being able to pick up songs by ear. (see #4).
I'm sure there's other benefits that I'm not thinking of at the moment. But this lesson just blew my mind. There's a ton of great information here on GW, but for me and where I am in my journey, this is by far the BEST video here. PURE GOLD!
Thank you Tomo!
I agree. This was so good I was on the verge of starting a new thread for this topic myself.
Fresh thinking to:
• Play each triad starting at lowest position on each string
• Simultaneously playing the intervals for each triad on nearby string sets
• Using D minor (D dorian) as the focus chord for the ii iii IV V (D- E- F G) progression, rather than always chasing after the individual chords. I may not have explained that last part too well, so I encourage everyone to watch the video for Tomo’s guidance.
Tomo wisdom:
• “You have to really feel the sound”
• “If you use scale, then that’s like a really long sentence…better to use just triads
Thank you Matt for your feedback on the ET 14 Diatonic Triads!
So happy to hear all that! This concept is foundation first then you can use it as a tool for improvisation or learning the fretboard without memorize anything.
Good job! I really appreciate your passion, dedication, commitment and efforts here!
Thank you.
Tomo
Thank you Linda for your review!
Yes! Dorian triads!
Thanks so much for your encouragement to others!
Beautiful!
Tomo
Yup! I've been working on this for some time now! Long study but it's worth it. Getting closer to applying it but still working on making the foundations of the pyramid solid before adding the other blocks. If the foundation is weak the other layers will topple down and you'll be back to the first layer!
Remember the tortoise not the hare wins the race! ;)
