I watched a Tomo video I think on YouTube and not here, where he made a passing comment to not worry about learning every key - I think it was meant as - don't worry about learning every key initially, but focus on 3 or 4. I've been searching my history to try and find the video, but so far I've come up empty.
BUT the question that this led me to is which keys to focus on? Obviously C since that what most of Tomo's lessons are in. I'm guessing Bb only because there's lots of references to Bb blues (Blue Monk is my current woodshed song and it's in Bb). I'm working through the Essential Theory and Fretboard Mastery sections. Basically I'm working really hard at triads and single string scales. The two lessons posted so far about diatonic triads really has me thinking in terms of the key in it's entirety ( C major, D minor, E minor, etc) rather than just a sequence of notes.
Since E and A are the "guitar friendly keys" would it make sense to focus on these keys? Is there a recommended sequence to follow? I don't want to just go through the cycle of 4ths and wind up with a bunch of flat keys that I'll almost never (most likely) play in.
Thank you Matt for this topic.
For learning triad inversions, I recommend to learn C, F, Bb, then Eb or D.
For guitar friendly keys... G, D, A, E for sure!
Like that... 3-4 keys are enough for a while.
Please do not rush!
Good job Matt!
Thank you!
