I did "Ear Training" Chord progression (3 types) at our GW Live Streaming.
I think most people understood 1st part: Triads / Major and minor chords. 1 6m 2m 5 in key of C and in key of G.

2nd part was using simple 7th chords. And it was mixing 5th string root & 6th string root.

This is awesome and fun way to practice learning 7th chords sounds. Steely Dan has always felt daunting to learn. Made a loop to try more later.

Those bends beginning of the solo are not easy to play clean like you are. Hearing something that keeps grabbing my attention, happens around five mins 20 seconds in. Not sure what’s happening if you’re playing an augmented chord tone or something else. It happens before going back in to the start of loop of f major 7 drop 2 voicing. Beautiful sound.

First, thank you for explaining what "drop two" means. I have heard of that but thought it was maybe a piano thing. But now I see that I am "dropping the second note of the chord" towards the floor. The light bulb has gone on!

Also, I think that is just about the right amount of content for my brain to absorb in a single lesson (diatonic 7th chords in 2 separate keys, plus a little Steely Dan to play around with).

This lesson was awesome! The exercise IV iii ii I at the end though simple was nicely melodic and musical.

Sounded great. One thing I did was start to allow my pinky to hammer on in that progression to figure out what embellishments would work for adding flavor over the chords which was cool.

Thank you for also breaking down the various types of 7th chords. They really sound amazing.

Did I hear you say you will show us how to do the 7th chords in other areas / fingerings?

Ref: ET18. Diatonic 7th Chords 6th String Root. Posted today March 14. Really glad I watched this. Learned new fingerings for the 7th chords. After watching ET 17 last week (diatonic 7th's with root on the fifth string) I had assumed that the chord voicings would be the same (root-fifth-seventh-third) only with the root on the 6th string. But no! An entirely new, beautiful voicing (root-seventh-third-fifth). Lovely!

Is it acceptable (or recommended) to bar some of these chord structures with my first finger? Just trying to avoid bad habits.

One more thing forgot to include in last comment. Since 6th string root maj7 arpeggio is a lot. That abbreviated version shared in ET18 with the fingering at various positions was big for me. And the phrase starting at major7 this is one seems popular have been hearing a lot. There’s a lot of other things. Another is Bending to 5th Root also up to minor third gives a nice bluesy sound that has a nice contrast with major sound. Another is 4th degree and to make it on the four chord or passing ideally. Have to watch out a little for this. Major pentatonic then major scale. Shapes don’t work..
a lot to unpack in this going to take more review than one time to really sink in

Today (03-21-25) ET19. Diatonic 7th Chords 4th String Root: What I got out of this (in addition to some beautiful chord voicings) was the guidance/prompting to combine the 4th/5th/6th string root voicings in a phrase. The note combinations may switch around (not all are drop 2) but the movement of the chords is beautiful. I may not be explaining this clearly, but do make the time to watch ET19 to see Tomo do this beautifully. Nice lesson.
