Hello guys, and Tomo thanks for ur lessons. I have found that my guitar path has evolved into alot of melodic rock, especially the artist Buckethead. Such soulful melodies...
My question for you is: Should i part the way of my playing so that i have "work" as music theory and Tomo`s lessons. Then when i want liesure i play my rock tabs?
I have been extending the riff from "Never too late" by Three days grace, and i figured out its in the key of D minor.
So i took my guitar wisdom from Tomo-sensei and made more melody and arpeggio instead of the ugly powerchords and lyrics they use in the song. This migh be a good way of combining the work and liesure part of learning to play the guitar?
Thank you Fillip for sharing your path here.
Melodic rock. It's all about Major scale, triads, arpeggios etc.
Buckethead is very talented guitar player!
If you want to be a great guitar player, then you need to trust yourself and need to have a strong commitment toward your practice time. You still can enjoy learning music theory with music. Don't decide anything! You never know until you do it! So please don't worry.
About tabs. I highly recommend not use it. You will ruin your imagination! Do not hurry! No need to hurry! Learn everything slowly (not forever!) and deeply so that you can learn and be familiar with important topics include One String Approach (scales) & triads (Inversions)
You really should watch Essentical Theory from ET1 (Lesson One) to ET18 (So far... all new!)
You are talking about more performance part. You need to prepare how to practice importamt topics.
Definitely! Learn, study materials ... then you can play "Playing" time or transcribing your favorite song's chords, melody and solo etc.
Thank you.
Tomo
Thank you Tomo, i will.
i definitely like your approach Tomo. I am lacking some ear training skills but trying to get better. On the second part, no patterns, no shapes, no memorization...that resonates very much. Coincidentally my eyes were open by Bucketheads guitar teacher to this scale degree view and importance of theory and fretboard knowledge and how color of sound is in numbers/scale degrees. For the most part i learn any new musical object by finding it directly on guitar from knowing its formula without looking at any diagram. As I said, lacking for now the ear component (weaker than i would like) but the approach you advocate makes so much sense and will be my lifelong path on guitar. Thank you Tomo.
You're very welcome Fillip!
