?? Tomo on Just The Two of Us Three Levels Vid

Hi Tomo:

I was wanting to learn Just the The Two of Us song and I found your vid on it on YT that says three levels from a few years ago.

I’m sorry, but I am confused.

In the intro / part 1, you go through chord progression that you have recorded on loop:

Db Maj 7
C7
Fmin 7
Eb min 7
Ab 7 (I think)

Then it repeats and you say “Db Maj 7 >> C7 = ‘5 7 of 1’ and then you go into the minor scales over it as part 2.

I think you first go into natural minor (b3 b6 b7) starting on 1st string 1st fret (so F) and then show minor pentatonic both on 1 finger over the looped chord progression and it sounds lovely.

I just don’t understand this ‘5 7 of 1’ thing at all??? It’s not the relative minor for key of Db which I thought the song was in? I am not sure how to get this, but I want to and am wrestling with it…sorry a little slow on the uptake.

Don't worry!

When you don't understand something, you need to step back a few steps and learn more foundation. This case, you need to know all the intervals in triads and 7th chords.

Basic chords are:
DbMaj7 C7
F-7 Eb-7 Ab7
DbMaj7 C7
F-7

bIV V to Im (Key of Fm)
ii V to I (Db)

You can play natural minor scale on 1st string. (F minor scale b3 b6 b7)
Then think more chord tone to each chords.

1) Learn all triad inversions on 123 set strings.

2) Learn basic 7th chords from Essential Theory section.

3) Go to Just The Two Of Us lesson here at GW

Thanks for the reply.

I will dig deeper into this.

At this point I do understand how to form triads across all strings in all inversions moving both up and down neck and across, and consequently how to make them minors.

I will study the 7th chords deeper again (I did go through this video a couple times).

I think the key switch is where I'm getting confused...hopefully it will clear up with more study.

I did watch the first lesson in your first reply where you break it down further and then show Jazz chords and then diminished chords progression. Very nice!

Slowly we will get there! Just need patience...

Thank you Tomo, I will try to play simpler and cleaner. I think a year ago, I wouldn't have been able to even find these triads...probably my head would have spun around. Anyhow I will keep working!

Yes, I just got that Strat this Christmas...it's the Fender Lincoln Brewster Signature Strat...awesome DiMarzio Area 58 & 61 pickups zero hum single coil, and it has this crazy extra 10db boost when you pull the Volume knob to activate...really nice guitar!

I'm on the opposite coast in CT, so we get the sunrise near the water, which is beautiful!
