Another excellent lesson. This is a great flavor to add. I learned a lot.

Here are some notes on my legal pad that I use for note taking. Of course, like Tomo taught me, if you don't look at your notes and notebooks, they are just paper.

Anyway, I picked up these concepts being covered:

Using one string method, starting with Aeolian scale, then raise the b7 degree to natural 7th degree to get to Harmonic minor scale.

The progression: B-7(b5), E7(b9), A-7. Tomo shows a chord shape for each chord

7th chord arpeggios for each chord.

Triads for each chord. Diminished triads for B-7(b5). major triads for E7 and minor triads for A-7

5 different one octave Harmonic minor scale forms. Roots on 6th, 5th, 4th and two different 3rd string roots scale forms.

Using A Harmonic minor and Blues scale/ minor pentatonic scale, and triads and arpeggios to solo over progression.

At some point in history, probably during the renaissance, someone was playing a diatonic 2-5-1: eg. Key of C > B (-7b5) to, E minor7 and resolving on A minor.

Except on this day, the person playing those chords on whatever instrument, and having had too much to drink the night before, instead of playing E-7, played E7, and wow! it sounded cool! That was the birth of harmonic minor.

It’s a five dominant where you would diatonically speaking expect a five minor seven. So the way that I think of it, is that whenever I’m playing a minor 2-5-1 where the five cord is dominant, that’s harmonic minor. It’s a minor five borrowing from major in that instance.

Harmonic minor has so much more going on as well. That was the birth of the diminished seventh chord which is truly man-made and cannot be found in the harmonic series or the Pythagorean spine as it’s called. It was the happiest of musical accidents!

I thought of this after I posted above. You’re playing in a relative minor key like C and G Sharp shows up, right there you know it’s E7 the major third, which is the signature note in a minor 251 where five is dominant seventh.
