Hi guys,

Recently I have been learning G triads string 1-3 to build up my foundation to learn how to play in C G chord progression, I decide to limit to 1-3 strings to not overwhelm myself.

I have watch Mr Tomo's videos about triads, my idea from the video is that once you have learnt the triads you can move on.

My question is when should I be moving on in terms on triads for example G triads done I can do A triads.

Should the way be:
1)Can hear the inversions before playing (do mi so etc.)
2) inversions (R 1st 2nd)
3) Intervals (r 3 5)
4)name of intervals (G B D)
4)internalise by keep practicing g triads string 1-3 continuously until I can play without hesitation

Any tips would be appreciated, thank you🙏

Hi Zxuan - thanks for this post. And thanks Tomo for the evaluation criteria - that helps. I am in the same place as Jiayang. I might be slow, but just to share progress - I started C major triad videos and work on 3/12. I started C minor triads on 4/5, but still practice the major triads. For major triads, I can do all of the things Tomo mentions, but not quite in 2 seconds. And I take even longer for minor, but I'm getting there. I have not started to do other keys, but I will when I meet Tomo's test of 2s execution for C maj/min. I have to admit that I need to devote the last ~ 25% of my practice time to "noodling" because it's hard to stay focused on this one thing.

One more thing. QAP01 is a test - it lays out a good guideline for competency like Tomo mentioned in his response:

You can never leave triads!!! Ever!!!!

Seriously, I think you can move on from particular triad exercises but then you can move on to apply triads in say chord progressions on one set of strings, or in the same position, or work on soloing with triads etc.

So, I don't think you ever get away from them but can start to apply and connected them in different ways.

HI everyone, i'm new here.
I'm French, sorry if my english isn't perfect.

After 20 years i can only agree with Michael, you can learn them in a few days but master them can take a lifetime. What i mean is that you can always improve and find new relation between them. I overlooked triads and inversion for so long because i thought I knew them and my ego was telling me "nah you don't need to practice those simple things, you know them already" wich i deeply regret now (but as we say it's never to late to grow) cause knowing them and having them deep in your subconcious without thinking is an other level.
Now i love to practice those stuffs a little bit everyday, i put them in my warmup routine and i feel the difference but stil a never ending way to go..

Everyone have his way of doing, just DON'T put pressure on yourself, keep training, and if you get bored with them or any exercice, do other stuff to stay excited i think it's key.
And add that using chord progression you like to practice them can really help.

And that's not a secret but concistency is key, better do it 5 or 10 min a day than 3 hours once a month.
