Hi Tomo,
Just wanted to give a bit of feedback on the stream. Probably more personal than anything but I still found it hard to grasp how to transcribe. I understand the concept but it was still too difficult at this point in time. I'll echo what one user commented on that maybe another round a more basic song would be a good starting place. Or maybe breaking down the steps to transcribing a bit more.
As an educator to educator I think it's often difficult to see from a beginner mindset. I understand teaching English as second language like the back of my hand and sometimes forget how difficult it is for students to learn what I think is a simple concept. I think in a similar way you, Tomo, are so far advanced that sometimes a number of us get lost in something you find second nature. This really clicked when you commented on my post on the live stream about how when you began it might have taken you weeks or months to transcribe the first time.
With that in mind I wonder if it would be possible to show us those initial steps and what steps to take next. Would the following be the correct way to get started?
So, for example, if I wanted to start transcribing the solo, would I play the first note of the solo, hum it, to get the correct pitch and then search for the note on the guitar? And keep doing that? And then how would I know which string to play the note on as there is often more than one string to play the same pitch? Would that matter? Can a song be transcribed differently by different people and still get the song correct?
Or like from a Steve Vai video on transcribing where he shows an early step he did where he would sing the C and D note and make up a rhythm and then transcribe that as starting point. Is that a way to get started? Or????
And is transcribing related to ear training? I kinda think yes, but am not sure. As I said tonight I'm only at the ear training place by doing the major scale and comparing two notes with each other and mostly the root to other intervals.
I hope this makes sense as I really don't know how to get started. Just feeling lost on this part.
Finally, I think it would be cool, if you did another transcribing video for a live stream, to help us get started a bit more. Maybe play a note from a song on your stereo or phone, and get us to grab our guitars and try to figure out a note or a sequence? I don't know just spit balling ideas. I just really liked the streams where we interacted in the process a bit more.
Thanks for doing the stream tonight Tomo and Sammi. I think it was fun to try to learn about something I know very little about. Can't wait to learn more!
