Hi Tomo:
I have been camping out in the blues lessons and have been working on the basic blues shuffles.
However when I even try to sing the melody over the shuffle it all goes to pieces.
Any advice for gaining traction this way?
Thanks
Chris
Thank you Chris!
Singing melody while you are playing simple shuffle bassline.

Play F blues bassline.
1 1 1 1
4 4 1 1
5 4 1 1
Then sing Back at the Chicken Shack melody.
Play it very slow. Metronome at 50-70 per beat.
You can also sing Blue Monk, C Jam Blues, Bag's Groove etc.
You can pick any blues melodies.
Good job!
Tomo
Hi Chris,
Singing and playing is a tough one when you try to get it started. You are experiencing a common hurdle.
Honestly what works is your playing should be almost automatic before you can start to sing. Also make sure you can hum or sing them melody in the same way, almost automatic. Then I'd suggest humming and then playing and then if that works then start to add in words.
It's just a matter of getting both pieces almost unconscious then the pieces will flow together.
Good luck!
Thank you Michael for sharing your experience.
One more important part on singing.
Sing as soft as you can!
Thank you.
Tomo
You mean this one, Tomo?
Yes, will sing softly!
@Michael, thank you! I will continue to work it so it's subconscious. I guess it's kind of like drummers who get limb independence, like forcing your brain to control different things simultaneously...Tricky!
Somehow now my foot can tap the beat in timing, it justs gets a little wonky, but will try again.
I heard that Dave Mathews on Satellite would play that intro as a finger exercise until he could do it while conversing with someone and now it's an amazing intro to that song...
Yes! This is it!
Thank you.
Tomo
