Hey all!
Walter here. I’ve been working on transcribing Rose Room by Charlie Christian. I’ve spent the last few weeks just listening and figuring out the main chord progression.
The last few days I’ve been digging into the solo note by note, and I’m surprised at how with enough patience how doable this can be.
I did my best when I played and sang a note first, then listening to the song for the next note, singing it, finding it on guitar and writing it down.
I have very little experience transcribing and this activity has been so beneficial for my ear, and has done a lot for getting these bebop licks into my playing.
Thank you for the recommendation Tomo!
I want to keep learning more jazz by ear and transcribing, there’s so much to hear!
Learning this song by ear has taught me much patience and respect for the deep thoughtfulness placed in each note of this tune.
Happy practicing guys!
Thank you Walter for sharing your experience.
Good job! Consistency is so important and nothing is instant.
Good thing all talk some time to achieve.
This case, one song with chord progression & solo...
2-3 weeks to finish?
1) Listen this solo over and over.
You can spend one week, everyday until you can hear this solo in your head.
2) Once you can hear this solo & can sing this solo... then you can start to transcribe each note.
This process will take some time. Be patient.
More you do, you are training your musical hearing skill.
Not only you can hear "intervals" but also you are getting familiar with jazz language and jazz chord progressions.
One of reasons that I really wanted to transcribe this, because this song influenced Wes Montgomery, Barney Kissel, Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell (and Tomo!) So I really thought it is an important part of puzzles in Jazz.
You're very welcome! Thanks for reminding is about "Transcribing" = "Patience"
Thank you.
Tomo
