In the Am D9 Progression. I think A Dorian is more fit for this prograssion. My question is when use the A melodic minor is good timing to use, make the jam sound smooth?
Hi biosli,
In this instance the only difference between A Dorian & Lydian b7 is G#. So, only 1 note to parse. That note makes the A minor chord a minor major; over D7 it's sharp 4 (Lydian).
I always hear the Lydian note wanting to move up or down as more of a passing tone, unless the dominant chord contains the #4.
Moving up over the tonic of Am you get the root; move down you get flat 7, so Am7. Over D7, move up you get the 5th (A), move down you get the suspended note G.
Let your ears guide you as Tomo says and play around with G#!
Thank you Ken for your advice.
Similar to spices or cheese .... a little or more!
Depends each person's taste.
