I wanted to post this video even though it’s not from guitar wisdom. It’s a solo off of the internet from Sandra Sherman for Autumn Leaves and I have been working on it trying to apply Tomo’s pearls of soft touch, hold puck lightly, vary dynamics. Would love to hear any constructive criticism. Thanks for watching.

Thank you Rich for sharing this!
Great playing! You can really follow the chord changes. You can play those altered scales.
1) If you use this backing track, then slow down! (Too fast and too comfortable!)
2) Too many 8th notes that using same dynamics. (Not enough dynamics)
3) Use a little more space & triplet notes. (When not play and more rhythmic)
4) Turn up your guitar & make brightrer notes so that this setting makes really difficult to play notes overall. This makes you to use more dynamics.
You can make own backing track recording. Simply play with a metronome (2&4)
So this way you can pick much slower tempo so that you can pay attention on your dynamics.
This tempo is so copmforable and too easy to play notes! You want to improve your guitar playing so you need to choose "Tempo" much more carefully! Take your time to choose.
If you want to transcribe Autumn Leaves solo, please listen Jim Hall / Ron Carter Duo.
This is one of the best solo on Autumn Leaves.... any jazz guitarist must transcribe this solo!
Thank you.
Tomo
Thank you for your detailed response.
Just so I am clear you are recommending
1.) slowing down the backing track
2,3.) use less 8th notes and more triplets and space to get better dynamics
4.) turn UP my guitar
But I’m not sure what you mean when you say
‘This setting makes really difficult to play notes overall‘
What do you mean?
And thank you - I guess I have a new project transcribing that Jim Hall version of ‘Autumn Leaves’.
As always you are the best!!
Thank you.
You're very welcome.
Yes! Totally.... always slower than you want to play!
You use more rhythmic approach more than just filling in with all 8th notes.
Yes! You want to use more dynamic so you need to turn yoiur volume so than you can not play with normal picking.
Should be so sensitive that you need to feel very uncomfortable to start with.
Ask me if you don't get this. This part is so hard to understand it.
In order to play with dynamics. Your volume is loud and clear (brighter) and it's not easy to play.
You really need to pick softer.
Even better if you use single coil pickup guitar for learning dynamics.
Try this setting on your amp. More treble, less bass. Try it once, Treble at 10, Bass at 0.
Great idea! Transcribe by ears only! Don't look at any YouTube lessons!
You're very welcome!
Good job Rich!
