Yet another muting question.

Does anyone have any advice on muting the bottom three strings when strumming triads on the top 3 strings? (Think Soul Man type strumming) It seems to me that this would require a different technique than R37 muting. I've been trying to come up with a technique, but I've come up short so far so I thought I'd put this out there to see if anyone else has any ideas.

Thank you Matt for asking muting question. I still don't know what exact notes & rhythm that you want to play.....
Maybe you can provide a little bit more about a song. Key. Parts, chords, notes, fingerings etc.

Thank you Tomo. I think the first 30 seconds of part 2 might have answered my question. I need to work on being able to cleanly fret the chords on the top three strings while muting the lower strings with my thumb wrapped around the neck. I think I need to just get my left hand used to doing something it's not currently used to doing.

And as reference, I've been on a R&B/soul kick lately. The song I'm referring to is the strumming of the triads in the verses of Sam and Dave's Soul Man.

Thank you Matt! Those are triads! Use a lot of 1st finger to mute lower notes.

I will make a quick video later.

Thanks Matt and Tomo - good thread and video - more than the subject line indicates for sure. I can figure out some basic things with barre chords. I'm excited to explore using my newly acquired triad wisdom to play songs in more interesting and challenging ways all over the fretboard. After July challenge.

Yes! It's a great thread about rhythm guitar / triads / muting technique.

Normally I add a few more things for fun.

Triads are so amazing! A lot of possibilities.

Best way to learn the fretboard.

Thanks so much Tomo! This cleared up alot! I was really confused by the key. I was hearing the original Sam and Dave version in G, so I was really doubting my ear when you showed it in E. But I found an interview with Steve Cropper where he said that the original version was in G, but for the Blues Brothers, to accommodate John Belushi's voice, they dropped it down to E and he's been playing it in E ever since.

Just watching your video above reinforced that I don't need to play anything EXACTLY the way it was recorded. So good lesson there. I also watched several videos of Steve Cropper playing it with a full band, and that made me realize that he's not the guy that is making the complete sound. He's playing his part, and the other guitar player and the rest of the band are filling in the full sound.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the time and effort that you put into GW, and your willingness to make these extra video lessons to address specific questions. When you learn something, first thing I do.. I don’t assume anything and I don’t rely anything.
It’s a fresh start! Don’t worry!

Certainly you can learn exact sound then you can change positiosn.
In this case, 1 (1st), 2m (1st), 1 (2nd) inversion triads so I would learn all possible positions so that I can play in any keys! Be preopared.

When I study any music, I try not look at any written music or any performance because I don’t want my eyes are playing music!
Don’t expect too fast!

My pleasure! Like this, I just make this lesson without ZERO preparation because I already did my homework in years ago without videos or tabs. Listening! July Challenge will help you many ways!
