Hello everyone!
It’s been a few weeks since we wrapped up the July Challenge, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the experience we shared as a community.
First off, congratulations to each of you who participated in this month-long challenge! Your dedication and passion provided us with so much inspiration. Huge shoutout to the 33 members who posted in the weekly threads—thank you for sharing your updates and motivating others to keep going. Your insights and encouragement will guide future Guitar Wisdom students who decide to take on this challenge later.
As many of you noticed, this challenge wasn’t just about triads. In true Guitar Wisdom fashion, the ideas we explored reached far beyond 3-note shapes on the fretboard. Many of you reconnected with music on a deeper level. You learned to listen (and sing!), not just play. You started to recognize pitch, not just positions on the fretboard. Most importantly, you learned how to approach practice. Through slow, mindful work, you transformed a "simple" exercise into a meaningful musical experience.
Linda captured it beautifully:
“I think, in the end, the July Challenge has been about internalizing these three triads, but also about us becoming a different kind of musician. Go back and look at y’alls comments…the talk is all about feeling, listening, hearing, touch…meaning and understanding. No discussion of tab, shapes, or of some YouTube ‘how-to-play-this-song’. Guitar Wisdom points the way.”
Please feel free to add any reflections or takeaways in this thread—we’d love to hear what the July Challenge meant to you.
Thank you Sammi for making this thread!
You wrote a lot of details on our July Challenge!
Linda’s comment… so lovely! Thank you Linda!

Sammi, it is great to reconnect after the July challenge. Everyone did amazing. This challenge was definitely different for me than the November challenge. I was able to really reflect on what I am doing and became mindful of what I am hearing. I became aware of my little idiosyncrasies that hold me back. I have more attention on what my distractions are, and how to focus my time. My little notebook keeps things square. I am so internally grateful for the knowledge about limitation. I also now welcome mistakes, where before I would judge myself for them.
Not only this, but I feel like I was able to finally connect to my electric guitar. I have been so intimidated by it for so long. I now see a clearer vision of a sound I will create and am no longer hiding behind my fear to turn nobs. I still have quite a long way to go here, as there are so many guitars, amps, and pedals. I now look forward to this challenge.
I didn't realize it, but I have been following Tomo and Guitar Wisdom since 2020. How the time flies. I feel ashamed of not knowing how to really study, watch, listen and internalize the videos he has shared until now. I now have started a real routine that will change will my life for the better. I watch and rewatch, am patient, and look at the tiny details that can be easy to miss if glossed over. I do one thing at a time rather than trying to multitask which has gotten me in trouble with my past work.
I have taken the triads to the next string sets. I am so excited by not looking at my hands when I play. It brings me great joy to finally have some improvement in really knowing my instrument. Confidence is on it's way. The one string one finger approach is part of my daily routine. I love the ear training exercise that is paired with this. I am planning on recording the ear training exercise but have not gotten to that step yet. The Bb swing groove has really inspired me and have incorporated it in my everyday practice. I take notes when watching videos. I find quiet space for work hours. I can't express the gratitude I have for you and your family.
Guitar wisdom family you have helped light the fire in me that was only a dull light before. Blessings to all of you. Thank you.
Great stuff Serena! Since 2020! I’m also a fan of one thing at a time and many guitars amps and pedals :)
Inspired by your Taking notes , great you are doing this
thank you Jeffery. I feel like the tides are finally starting to change. Cheers my friend.
