Hello, Tomo! What should I do if I am having issues being able to recognize Do Mi So from Mi So Do from So Do Mi? They sound different to me, but I cannot pinpoint or recognize which is which by ear. What do you recommend doing to learn to recognize one from another?
Thank you Scott for sharing this.
Please don't worry! It will take some time to understand triads deeply.
Did you practice Major Scale on one string?
Name of note: C D E
Intervals: Root Major2nd Major3rd
Singing" Do Re Mi
Did you practice those a lot?
Did you watch this video 4-5 times?
https://tomovhxtv.vhx.tv/videos/et01-c-major-scale
If you only watched 2 times then not enough.
One string approach to hear
1) Do Mi So (C E G)
2) Mi So Do (E G C)
3) So Do Mi (G C E)
Learn only one set from 123/234/345/456 set strings.
Maybe top 3 strings. 123 set strings.

Thank you.
Tomo
I practiced a lot: Major Scale on one string, Name of note, Root M2, M3, Singing Do Re Mi. I will slow down and do the one-string approach to hear Do Mi So, Mi So Do, and So Do Mi. I can do the Major scale on all strings individually. Also, Root-3rd, 2nd-4th, 3rd-5th, 4th-6th, etc. I have learned Triads vertically in the first position in the key of C.
I am learning the 123 set now. I am beginning to understand that you play triads over the chord progression to sound better. I will watch these videos over again several times as you requested.
Good job Scott. Please be patient. It will take sometime to settle in. Slowly you will hear those.
Play each note slowly and think about all. Good job! Each video, you should watch it many times.
Keep going!
Tomo
Thank you, Tomo!
Perhaps I need to listen closer instead of focusing on patterns. I know that is something you say is not the way to do it.
Hi Scott,
I recommend spending a month doing the "July" triad challenge on top three strings every day.
Search "July" in forums and dig deep!
You'll be singing Do-Mi-So, Mi So Do and So Do Mi before you even play them!
Kurt
My pleasure! Any topic... you want to stay with it without any expetation. Be patient and keep doing!
That's why I practice 2-3 things everyday without my expectation.
Tomo
Thank you, Kurt! Great suggestion. I will do that today!
Tomo, Sunil, Kurt: The one string approach playing different intervals is helping me immensely! I am very excited about this! I'm taking my time, going slowly. I like to compare the one string approach with the actual triad inversion because it helps me to identify root, first, and second inversions better.
Hey Scott, Great thread man.
Just wanted to add my support to keep going!
I really feel like the boy from Karate Kid sometimes (cheesy og 80s version :)) triads are definitely "wax on, wax off".
(Apologies for the comparison Tomo, I hope it is not offensive.
Kind of like Apu from The Simpsons for me 😅. Thank you, come again! Haha)
Someone else I know personally used that same reference when I was talking to them this week!
exactly!
ingrained into the culture now.
ubiquitous thought structures.
that *is* the american experiment.
i think that's why they have(/had) a class about "The Simpsons" at UC Berkeley, and other schools.
"The Karate Kid" should be recommended in the intro messages?...idk maybe not.
🤷🏾♂️
So great to hear that Scott! One String One Finger Approach can really help you to hear those intervals plus you can feel each distance on one string. Best way is to work "slow" and long time! "Take your time!" No rush at all! You are doing so well! Thank you for being patient! Good job!
Tomo
Great suggestion, Kurt! From listening to Tomo's challenge videos and everyone's submissions, I could hear triads in my head throughout that month. One could say I became familiar with the sound :)
Well done, Scott.
I remember in one video I saw Tomo playing the one-string C major scale and playing the McDonald's theme on one string. Since that time I have started doing that for everying little tune I hear (not always easy/possible on one string though, but I'm surprised how many are). As Christmas is coming around, I'm all over Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Feliz Navidad etc at the moment. I even try to replace the words with Do, Re, Mi....
Thank you jh for pointing out that lesson. One String One Finger approach. This can mix with Ear Training and triads etc. Keep it simple is so important! Many great Major scale song!
Tomo
We've got a lesson for that! https://tomovhxtv.vhx.tv/videos/fc-chord-melody-silent-night
Thanks, Sammi. Wow! I will check that one out.
... a little Blue Monk reference in there too :)
love this! 🙏🏾
Thanks Sammi for sharing that lesson!
