Dear Mr. Fujita,
Why dont we use metronome during sight reading exercise and why is it important to count out loud and say 1 AND 2 AND etc. why cant I use metronome?
Thanks!
Thank you for this thread and your question.
First you need to practice anything with slow tempo and no need to use a metronome.
Metronome will not make you a great guitar player. Same as music theory. They are tools.
So first you should practice without a metronome.
Then once you can play it smoothly then you can introduce a metronome at slower tempo.
Sight-reading is to read notes and can work on both hands techniques *no noises, muting techniques, Tone, dynamics.
Counting is easy way to understand about down beat and up beat. Try it with Four Four (Melodic Rhythm" Alternate picking exercise. You can practice counting and playing. Great challenge.
How about both? Try this one.

Is there a pdf of that exercise somewhere on this site?
Are you talking about Berklee Guitar Method Book Vol One?
There is no PDF.

Thank you for your detail answer Mr. Fujita.
for the first few pages I did not use metronome. I am now on page 18/19 where Mr. Leavitt introduces eight notes. I feel like I should use the metronome when there are eight notes or I feel like I am cheating because then I am ignoring the difference between quarter notes and eight notes.
