It has been a whirlwind month of GW. As a beginner I have been focused on practising FT 01 Chromatic scale 1234, ET01 C Major Scale on One string, and SR-01 Leavitt pg 3-5. If I take my time, this usually takes between 30-45 minutes.
My question is how do you know when to add to the practice routine, and how do you keep the time required manageable? I find 45min - 1 hr is the sweet spot for not getting frustrated, and easy to schedule during the day.
Thank you Jordan for great topic! Good job focusing Chromatic scale, One String Approch and Method book.
One String Approach (All lessons in Essential Theory) and any Triad lesson. You want to focus these until you feel super comfortable.
For techniques, I highly recommend these items.
1) Chromatic Scale 1212... (5 minutes)
2) R 3 7 Swing Groove (Blues to Jazz Standards) 10 minutes
3) Method Book. (15 to 20 minutes)
About 30 - 35 minutes.
Those above... you need to do everyday. When you feel very comforble then make these slighly shorter.... Then you can add a few items if you can. (One or Two items)
Record yourself often.
Review your performance.
Practice slow.
Use softer touch.
Be creative.
Depends on each person's patient and available time.
If you have one hour a day, that's pretty good!
Please enjoy your guitar journey.
Tomo
Thank you Tomo! I will do exactly these steps.
I purchased your GW book a few weeks ago and found it very helpful to setup my practise space, my guitar/amp (I actually took my guitar in for a proper baseline setup, fret job, and tasteful upgrades to pickups). You give the analogy at one point in the book using different trains to refer to chromatic scale, major scale, triads. I found the GW book (and short video clips) to be the equivalent of the "train system map" posted at every station. Helpful to get oriented quickly, provide context, and beginner friendly sequencing of philosphy -> fundamentals.
I also really enjoy the chapter on how musicians listen to music. It has completely changed how I would approach the questionnaire, and rewired how I am evaluating my favorite artists/album/song for the purposes of learning.
