Discovering the Fretboard

Good afternoon from Germany,

I have started using challenges from the very first lessons in Music Theory and Fretboard Mastery: Triads.

Thank you for presenting the path in this way. I mainly play for church on Sundays. The Guitar Wisdom approach has started to open the fretboard in ways I can understand and use. Focus on the different parts such as no extra noise through good muting from both hands, playing dynamically (even very soft), and playing with sustain have really improved my lead playing.

I feel its going to take me months to get the most out of even the first five videos of the two sections I mentioned. Are there any further tips for this stage of the journey?

Good job! Please watch essential theory section from beginning and better to watch 2-3 times on each lesson. Watch once without guitar then watch one more with your guitar.

I found the lesson on diatonic triads to be really, really good. It allows you to practice 3 of the 4 flavors of triad (major, minor and diminished) in the same exercise. It also helps with fretboard knowledge, learning the keys, learning the fretboard. Also, if you like John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, etc. they use a lot of triads on the B, G, D strings, so getting those triads down will help jump into being able to play songs and not just exercises.

I think you could squeeze augmented triads in there too (root-major third-raised fifth). Walk me back on target if that's not right.

I'll continue to work through the series and keep an eye out for the diatonic triads.

I really like John Mayer. I'm tracking they are using the triads in those three standard inversions all the time.

Another thing I see in these worship songs are a lot of lines based around the 2nd inversion of the G, B, and E strings. There is also a lot of suspensions by dropping the third in favor of the fourth or the second scale degree. I also see some power chords with on the higher (in pitch) four strings.

Understanding the basics of triad theory is helping me pull these techniques apart and put them back together. Sometimes I have to transcribe a song from C to A or whatever, which sometimes demands moving the lines to different strings, which changes the shape layout on the fretboard.

You can practice 1 & 4 triads together.

Once you learn basic diatonic triads (this one is Root Position)
So next two lessons will cover other inversions. Learn slowly so you will not memorize them.
You can hear them and play them.
