Hi professor
I hope you give me some advices.
I want to be able to understand degree of sound immediately.
It means when I listening the song, I want to understand quickly what degree's code is used in the key of the song and what code is used like 7th, add 9th and so on.
To achieve this abilities, I am focusing on the following practice.
1. Triads
In major and minor triad, I understand those difference and all conversion
And now I'm practicing triad with chord progression
When I playing triads with chord progression, I can feel that which note is Root, 3rd, 5th for the chord.
But, I don't really pay attention what degree's note it is in the key of the chord progression.
2.Ear training
I'm practicing some chords in the same root by raising the top note of the chord by half steps.
I'm trying to feel the mood of each chords and degree of each note for this practice.
This is like your lesson "One Note, Many Colors".
3.Playing scale on the one string
I'm practicing some scale very slowly using only 2nd string.
The reasons of starting this practice, I feel that the scale I understanding the sound is only major scale.
Graduately, I'm going to practice in all mode scale
I'm doing these practices, but I'm not seeing much results.
Is there any other practice I should do or something I'm missing to required skills to understanding the sound?
Thank you in advance.
Hi Motoki Ichisawa! Thank you for starting this thread. You're on the right track with your practice items. The concern you've raised about putting in the work without seeing results may stem from expecting too much too soon. It's similar to waiting for a pot of water to boil—when you stand over it, it feels like it takes forever to reach the boiling point. If you're focusing on developing perfect pitch rather than taking in what you learn from each practice, you might overlook the progress you're making. Learning to recognize intervals and degrees takes time. Perhaps you could take Tomo's advice and record your triad practice routine. This way, you'll have something to evaluate and track your progress effectively!
Thanks Sammi for encouragement!
Being very patient and keep pushing with steady efforts ... very important.
In fact, I still practice Chromatic scale exercise very slowly so I can focus on "quality"
I still practice R 3 7 swing groove for my time, my muting technique "quality"
I love working on my triad inversions but not about inversions. I already got that part but I could still practice about my lefthand pressure, no finger noise, no string noise. That's why I still need to practice triad inversions especially 654 string set & 543 string set.
These simple techniques can give me "freedom" but most people think more about "Performance" I think about foundation for better performance.
Thank you.
Tomo
