Thank you Mr. Fujita for a very informative live stream last night. I have a question…Last night you said that you don’t see the boxes (that we all learn..pentatonic, scales etc) on the guitar. I am one of the many who’s learned to navigate the guitar with shapes and patterns. I am extremely curious to know how do you view the guitar. You demonstrated how you couldn’t remember the pentatonic boxes (I’m honestly lost on the guitar without these roadmaps) But I so want to forget about them because, like you said, they only take you so far. Also any advice to breaking away from this way of visualizing the guitar? It seems like such a leap of faith.
Hi John,
I was in the same situation. Intervals are the key. The pentatonic is Root, b3, 4, 5, 7b so you have to know where every interval is. The one string approach first and then you have many lessons like triads, scales, arpeggios to learn how to navigate the fretboard. I don't remember the pentatonic scale shapes anymore and I don't need them.
Thanks Christian, I really want to get to that point of liberation. You’ve inspired me.
Thank you John! You're very welcome! It was so much fun!
Right! I used to see those shapes..... Now I hear Major scale or triads so that I can see basic notes around the fretboard based on - single string approch or triad inversions related thinking.
You can use small shapes if you want... but if you see those too much then your playing wiill be so stale (?). Even triad = 3 notes. You have choices. 1) One String Approch 2) 3 strings 3) 2 strings (two notes & one note) 4) 2 strings (one note & two notes) and more!
But if you think shapes.... then ....you know?
You can try to play pentatonic scales with only one string or maybe two strings.
Thanks for your question! Great question!
Thank you.
Tomo
