I love Albert so much and saw him a few times. The Velvet Bulldozer!
( He worked in cotton fields and construction and claimed he could pick a carpet off a hardwood floor with his bulldozer blade and not scratch the floor :-)

I have had this for many years but didn't really realize it was his first album (after he had a bunch of singles).

Also cool that Ike Turner is on piano on "Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong".

I heard Robin Ford on an interview in Greece on utbe somewhere. He was talking about how streaming negatively affected musicians lives -- only way to survive these day, he said, was to tour. He also said he has an online school, and mentioned their forums! They should come hangout here!

Unbelievable story, Kurt. A lifetime memory. And yes, absolutely one of the loudest concerts I've ever been too.

Kurt, what were your impressions of Stevie?

His public persona was humble, quiet, respectful, in my humble opinion. I never met him; never was close to his concerts. But I definitely heard him. I remember hearing about the helicopter accident on my commute to sjsu one morning. Same with Kurt Cobain. Just felt a great sense of loss for both.

When I worked the SRV show in the early 80's he seemed young and tired and normal compared to alot of the acts. Most were coming off a hit video as MTV started( Flock of Seagulls, Spandau Ballet, Billy Idol,Cheap Trick etc).
But some shows were amazing for me- EC, Ry Cooder, Elvis Costello, James Taylor
.
That day in Salem Stevie seemed really friendly and chatty and healthy!

When I heard he died I was in shock, left work early, and went to a dive bar I knew that had him on the jukebox.

Cobain seemed like it was only a matter of time.

I remember hearing about the old jazz guys (Miles, Coltrane) and their heroin addiction around jr high.
Stayed so far away from any of that.
I wish Stevie and Kurt did too!

Profoundly sad to see the collector come every generation...)

Interesting though to think about the notion of work and the music Kurt, Stevie,
Joe Pass, Charlie Parker, et al, left us.
They just spent a short time working on the music listened to for generations.

This comment made me laugh but then I started thinking about how much listening is required to get the essence of Albert King or almost any player into my playing...I think a lot!

But I know it is possible over time, slowly, because of what you have lived and taught. Also because I am making slow progress on stuff I am working on.

Idea for me (was) to learn one style note for note and all the detail nuances. Once you cooked it.... then just use a essence of it because when you add other part of influence... everything will not fit in one glass. (Think a glass of water....) You don't go out to get a bigger bucket! I try to stay in one size and learn a lot but just take a little. So all fit.

Yes Jeffrey! Sonny!
He is known for his amazing slide playing, of course, but his non-slide blues playing is incredible too.

I've seen him in Tennessee and Louisiana a few times solo and with John Hiatt.

good question about genre.
does genre really matter these days?

just before google was born i remember people trying to classify the growing internet. people had full-time jobs at places like yahoo! to classify stuff but it became a non-trivial problem because one thing could fit into many silos.
it was easier to then think in terms of graphs and their algorithms instead to guide classification, that's what makes google work.

music, is no different, i think.
but not sure what music folks think.

That is also my thoughts sorta. There still seems to be genres though. But some things seem to fit into many categories. Anything that is Popular is Pop technically right?

No idea though just curious because I was going to make a thread for Pop music but I was not sure what category this fell in.

We also got to see a performance of Mark Whittaker. Modern day Stevie Wonder lol. He played Rhapsody in Blue with the Honors Band during the conference. One of my goals is too learn that opening gliss on clarinet. I would love to play some of it for a senior recital in 4 years.

I also told my professor I play guitar and he said we might be able to incorporate that some how as well. Very excited to be excited about school again.

The solos he has me learning on clarinet are too difficult it seems but has unwavering trust that I will be able to learn them.

I think... he is setting me up for failure.

But, I think it is on me. I am committed and practicing clarinet daily. Working on the piece daily. Even bringing a guitar in the practice rooms so I can play guitar when I get frustrated.

I think it is up to me whether I fail or not but he did put a pretty heavy door in front of me.
