Hi Tomo and Guitar wisdom fellows, recently I have trained myself and are now able to do basic improvisations across the neck on serval different positions in slow/ medium speed songs like autumn leaves and other songs.
But I find it really hard to push the energy level of a song up with fast playing, especially in funky songs, what are some ways I can train to play faster!
Also what are some of your tips on doing solos in funky songs, I find soloing in funky songs really hard im comparison to jazz or pop songs.
Thank you Raymond for sharing your improvisation practice.
Let say when you practice Autumn Leaves.
Can I ask you some questions?
Before you strat improvising over Autumn Leaves,
what did you prepared?
Did you any of these?
1) Practice R 3 7 Swing Groove for Autumn Leaves with a metronome?
2) Practice triad inversions on top 123 set strings over Autumn Leaves?
3) Just in case, did you practice all 7th chord arpeggios?
4) If you practice those 7th arpeggios, did you practice same arpeggios in 3 different positiosn?
Are you focusing on Autumn Leaves or funk tune? If so which funk song?
In order to play faster, you need to practice slow so that you can work on how to play softer, relaxed.
For funky songs…. I don’t practice funk rhythm. I practice more swing groove with a metronome.
Many different tempos from very slow to faster.
I think you need to narrow down.
One song. One style for 3 months.
Pleaase let me know what you think.
Tomo
Thank you Kurt amd Tomo, those suggestions are exactly what I need to practice more on, I was expecting too fast. I need to slow down first, so that I make sure I had everything prepared!
You're very welcome Raymond! One at a time and go slow and deep!
Thanks so much for your passion!
Tomo
