"Sight-reading so great for clean technique!"- Tomo Fujita
Hi Scott,
Sight Reading is important. And deep. You decide how deep you want to go. A little each day.
I haven't seen today's livestream on it yet.
I think sight-reading Leavitt Method Book 1 is not just for learning how to read music.
It's about playing clean! Muting, eliminating noises.
It's also how to read it and then be able to play it on the guitar and sound great!
I love learning sight reading from Leavitt Book using Tomo's lessons to help me actually get somewhere.
I have the important REAL paper book "book " and for fun I also have an iPad version.
iPad version has some recordings I can listen to which helps me really hear what the music should sound like when played properly.
The paper book is the one you must have.
Here are some random sight-reading notes I have collected of "Tomo Wisdom"- (It's much more than just guitar :-)
The first one got me going for 90 days and beyond! I'm still going. I changed my goal from 3 months to 3 years :-)
The second one is a gift Tomo gave me with his kind words of encouragement.
Kurt
Day 145 of 1095 straight days of sight-reading
------
1) Do it 90 days. Even 3 minutes a day.
2) If you miss one practice session (even two minutes) at 89th day,.
3) Go back to DAY ONE!

Thank you, Kurt, for sharing your side! Working on Sight-reading/Method Book everyday! That's a great way to learn your guitar! You will improve in many ways (later) You are building your foundation so strong! I read that book 3 times at least plus went back some of etudes many times. I was doing this years ago without expecting. With this book I improved my guitar techniques very much.
I respect your work ethic and a strong discipline. It's so amazing! Your consistency will bring you a lot of fun and joy!
Great Guitar Wisdom!

A little more of Tomo's sight reading wisdom:
Berklee Method book volume one. Do that book everyday for 10-15 minutes. Everyday! The key is to do this everyday... even 5 minutes! Do this for 90 days! Then you can really see your improvement on your guitar playing! Through sight-reading series, you can really work on your muting technique, your tone, dynamics and more! I am so happy that you are into this! You can use a real book too.
Method Book Volume One (Sight-reading/Muting/Picking)
Yes! 15 - 30 minutes on this book... you will improve your techniques later (so good!)
Stay with same pages for 1-2 weeks. It's a reading book but I treat as testing book.
Leavitt Method Book: Do it more and stay on any duets or any musical sounding tunes.
Any duets, stay there for a long time. And record a few times.
Looper is okay. Because you cannot hear "LIVE SOUND" from your string noise or harmonics (in depths) and finger noise
.
Sight-reading so great for clean technique!
Learning is not memorizing things.
Sight-Reading (learn how to mute!)
I highly recommend sight-reading section.

Guitar notation and playing actual note is a little strange.
All you have to do is to learn basic notation on Guitar Method book Volume One.
Very simple. No need to worry about outside of this book when you are learning.
The way you talk about Sight-Reading. You feel that you need to do.
This way is easier. Just 5 minutes a day open "Method book" and do even 4 to 8 bars.
Every day is very important key. So, it's better NOT to make any big deal.
Just like you brush your teeth. You do it! Same way.
So please don't wait! More you wait... you don't notice something very small but you are missing
(noise issue, muting technique and MORE!)
Sight Reading 5 to 15 min
Slow down
Very important not judge about your level. Ask yourself, say true thing to yourself. Communicate deeply with yourself!
Yes! Practice for performance is more focus on practice for foundation first then you can apply things to performance.
I am super sensitive on any extra noise!
So one thing you can do is record yourself more often. Check any noise issues.
If you hear any noise, then play everything slower. Slower is better.
This book is to play good musical examples through sight-reading. Even pro guitarists could make a few picking noises or finger noises.
I use this book to fix any noise / muting technique issues. So that we all can improve guitar playing forever!
In order to do this... we need a strong commit
ment toward guitar techniques.
First straight your body! Good Posture first!
Guitar playing can give you all positive effect!
Yes! You need to believe 100% with a thing you do!
If you can afford 15 - 20 minutes on Sight-Reading everyday!
Amazing!

Bottom line is you need to stay one topic as much as you need.
I love blues! Triads, Essential theory, sight-reading & jazz standards are great to study / practice consistently!
Bottom line is foundation & muting technique etc.
Sight-reading series can give you a lot of details in techniques.
"Sight-reading" Is very important to play simple thing so well.
I would repeat same etude many times with slower pace.
Keep going! I am so lucky to find FOUNDATION early on.
Method Book Volume 1 is so good! Book itself no value until you involve with it!
