Week 3|Day 18
Now that I learned yesterday that I must keep all fingers on the frets when descending, I have developed the same issue Erik has above: "I [found] myself struggling with finger noise while descending raising my middle and ring finger off the string in first and second fret positions." Something new to correct!

Just for a little while.
Today I try to close my eyes to do ,then I find it have some different!
More feelings with unbalance, it can feel the pressure is flowing.Sometimes I forget use my elbow, sometimes hear noise or sound stop due to loss of balance...
Still remember the thumb and left elbow.
I decided to stick with watching videos before practicing, which is a big challenge for me.But I think it's a good thing!
Every day in the morning forget to take slowly, but in the afternoon I will remember it.

Day 19 week 3: backing up straighter today. Focusing on going slow and striking the note when the finger makes contact with the string. Concentrating on these together is bringing results.

Week 3, day 19
The problem:
• During descending, as I put all 4 fingers on the fretboard, it introduces tension between the fingers, particularly between index and middle fingers. So middle finger wants to skid along the string towards index finger as I lift it and creates string noise. I don’t even need to pick the string; if I just finger the notes and lift the fingers I can hear the string noise. Maddening! (but I will not give up. Because of this exercise I’ve become a tone junkie in pursuit of totally clean playing).

Those fingers are just stand by, touching the strings but no tension at all!
When you play the note you press that finger as soft as you can!
That's why I play each note for 3-4 seconds or more.
When finger moves toward side by side... then your finger makes string noise.
So fret distance is the problem then you can start from 5th fret to 9th fret.
It's not easy and not that hard... but you can do it! Very subtle.

Thanks for the clarification, I see now that I was doing it wrong (by actually trying to "fret" the note behind the other fingers). Such a relief! Thank you for the Guitar Wisdom.

I also worked on keeping my fingers still in the same place then transitioning after the fourth note

Week 3 | Day 19
I look forward to starting my practice each day with the 30-day challenge. Those first 5-10 minutes ascending and descending to the fifth fret and back as slow as a herd of turtles set a positive tone and attitude for the balance of my session. Thank you, Tomo.

Thank you for the supplemental videos on picking. Would you consider making one that focuses on right hand palm muting? I have had a lot of trouble with this - though I think elbow on body of the guitar may help - I will focus on that. But the palm muting - getting the base of my palm in the right position but not pressing too hard - keeping the thumb pad above the strings. Does this put your right hand in the right position - feels like the right hand is angled down some and the pick hits the strings at an angle (which makes noise) - so is is right if your palm is in right place you have to correct/turn up your pick to square it up with the strings?
Seems my hand is alway trying to angle toward the tone controls…

Not press at all! Lightly touching but keep moving because you need to shift if you play different set of strings.

Thank you for making that video. It helps a lot.
Your palm is barely touching the strings. Your pick is essentially vertical (which probably allows you to down pick and up pick with even volume). Also - your pick has very little angle to the string - so no rubbing sound.
I have been working on something from a previous video - forearm on the guitar body opposing the finger pressure on the fret - so thumb very little or even no touch the back of the neck - very cool.
Lastly, I have been finding it easier to do the chromatic exercises standing up - guitar in right place and easier to move naturally.
