Ok this magazine sounds dangerous
Hey Jeffrey, it's Free and full of music things. I do see very rare repressed limited editions. I picked up that Donald Byrd from here, pristine sound on an old 1979 turntable. I am on the waiting list for a few. Easy to browse this magazine and yes it is a great coffee table item. It is a jazz cover this year. I had to share for the cover art work. Enjoy!!
Guys , I love this song so much !
WoW , here are so many beautiful music !Thank you for sharing, love this thread!!
Wow! So beautiful. Thanks for reminding us of that classic 李jiayang. I'd love to learn that. I first knew it from my Mom's Johnny Mathis record.
That song was originally written as an instrumental by Erroll Garner. He gave it the title "Misty".
The back story of Misty:
Erroll Garner was inspired to write "Misty" on a flight from San Francisco to Chicago which passed through a thunderstorm: as the plane descended into O'Hare, Garner looked through the window to see a rainbow glowing through a haze and was moved to begin composing "Misty" on the spot, striking imaginary piano keys on his knees as he hummed the notes he imagined (causing his neighboring passenger to summon a flight attendant to assist the apparently ill Garner).
The lyrics were added later by Johnny Burke. Burke was initially reluctant to create lyrics for the tune but was persuaded to do so at the insistence of his pianist, Herb Mesick.
It was said that Mesick played the tune every time Burke came into the room, until Burke said:
"Alright, give me the damn music, and I'll do it."
Burke wrote the lyrics in two to three hours.
I love that Erroll was practicing without his piano :-)

"Look at me. I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree."
Beautiful!!

Thank you Kurt for sharing!
Tomo
What a beautiful song.
A great story, Kurt.
Everyone here’s so generous to share their knowledge it’s been really helpful. Jazz is very broad and if you’re just starting it may only take one song to get into it. Just need to find the right one you connect with. A lot of good ideas to try in here. Patience is key. Then it seems to open up more. Also helps to know Tomo forced himself to like jazz
I made myself forcing to listen jazz when I was 16... Sometime I was not comfortable but I just had to do it as if I was brought up with jazz music! It worked!
Keep listening one song over and over or just one jazz album for 2-3 months or more! Eventually jazz will live inside of you! Then you can hear it anytime, any speed!
Tomo
I was just reading where someone said that the "Jazz keys" were Bb, Eb, and Ab. Has anyone else heard this? And if true, what makes it so?
My understanding Linda is that it’s due to the fact that brass horns are a B-flat instrument. Though I’ve also heard it said that E flat is a singer’s key.
For sure, it’s not as easy for a trumpet player to play in our favorite guitar keys, such as D, G, A, E,!
The key of F is also very popular because it only has the one flat. So that’s easy for a horn player.
Thank you Linda... Bb and F... very popular keys in jazz.
Tomo
Bb and F ! Good to know
Great thread Jeffrey. I've been offline a while - lots of catching up to do. Looking forward to digging into all of these.
I'm going to take a risk on an "up and comer." She popped into my YouTube feed a couple of months ago, and I subscribed right away. Bossa nova / indie pop / Japanese / American - not the 70's kind of fusion, but super interesting and super musical. Also dig the violinists in her band. This is her newest, but I recommend checking her other stuff:
Thanks Clay for sharing this. She went to Berklee and studied jazz. Great player!
Tomo
Really liked it, Clay. Listened to it once, then once again without looking at the video. There is a lot of music going on there!
Thanks Clay,
I needed to replay it without looking at the video to really listen and hear. I like it. Super creative and different.
I really appreciate being exposed to new music like this from cool folks like you!
Kurt

If anyone is interested in listening to an up-and-coming jazz (pop) artist, I find Laufey to be a fun one to watch! Here is her Tiny Desk concert. Playful bossa nova to start
Hoo. What a voice. And I love the seamless transition guitar-to-piano.
So nice. New for me Thanks Sammi! She has a beautiful voice! Really good songwriter too.
Be fun to have a string quartet to play your songs with.
It was nice to see the chords she played on that first song on that cool Gibson. Was hoping to see her play more guitar.
Kurt
Thanks Sammi. Beautiful voice and arrangements. Shows that great songs can come out of relationship crises! He-he
